about

During the heavy first wave of covid everybody was shuffling around the house for something to do, isolated from friends, colleagues, and family. Not many people wanted to brave the risk of getting together to do anything. I was listening to a lot of music online. I was also digging through piles of old cassette tapes, playing old mixes and discovering many old recordings. One such recording was a weekend project from back in 1993, comprised mostly of a “jam” session with a few takes of rehearsed songs. I digitized the cassette tape, and started using LogicPro to cut and reassemble the parts, then patched together a few takes to create a mostly clean recording that had never existed. I also edited the jam sessions and assembled them to create a cohesive piece. I cut the whole thing into a series of “songs”, sent it to the guys and everyone was stoked to hear what had never existed before and that was resurrected in a way that I could have never have done myself in 1993. Thus a new recording project idea emerged.

Shortly after getting my first vaccination I reached out to Mark who lives about three doors down about doing a covid musical project. Mark has always been a musical inspiration to me. He had recorded an album for our rock band, had recorded and played live with many bands in North Carolina as well as toured nationally with a few outfits, including the Bowerbirds and my personal favorite, Ticonderoga. I was stoked when he agreed. We discussed a plan: Let’s get together Sunday mornings, sip coffee, and improvise. I had also just read about how the Descendents wrote and practiced while fully caffeinated and it appealed to me - “wake and rock”. Sunday mornings we set up two microphones in a live room and pushed record, then went on to play, usually around 2 hours per session.

Over the next few days I would listen to the long sessions, flagging interesting parts, then go back and pull the parts together, sometimes looping parts, sometimes just stacking them end-to-end. The goal was to mine the best parts of the original sessions and keep the feel and mood of what we had created live. We would then get back together and overdub in the same improvisational manner as the original recordings but over the now-arranged base tracks. Then we edited the mix again. Mark completed final mixes and editing, which can be tedious but which ultimately rendered the sound consistent and removed any off-sounding marks that bothered us. A few final instrumental flourishes and accents were added by Mark. Finally, we discussed sequencing the songs to create a record that had a flow and a sonic narrative as it plays. We dig it and hope you do.

Lost Cameras is Mark Paulson and Vincent Whitehurst

All songs are built from excerpts from live improvisational sessions recorded during covid year 2021 and recorded at home in Raleigh, NC.

Mark and Vince played all instruments on all tracks. Vince created the arrangements, the loops, and preliminary mixes. Mark and Vince then overdubbed additional tracks in the same improvisational manner, mainly during live sessions. Special guest Phi Moore played some guitar on ‘Circling the Block’ and ‘Five Dollars”. Mark and Vince then divided up songs and created final proposed mixes. Mark then dialed in the final edits and mixes on all tracks, as well as added a few instrumental flourishes here and there.
